15 Great tips for travelers
Traveling is all about broadening your horizons and making long-lasting memories. Whether you’re exploring a new continent, a new culture, trying new foods, or just relaxing on a beach, you will make so many new memories.
That being said, there are many things to consider when preparing and planning for a trip. It’s often a little overwhelming in the begging and it can be hard to know where to start.
Here are some travel tips and tricks to help you make the most of your next adventure.
N01 – Plan Ahead
Traveling can be spontaneous and some people do prefer to travel that way. However, whether you want to be a little spontaneous or not you need to plan ahead.
In my opinion, planning is very important. Not only does it reduce your stress level it is very important for security reasons as well.
Planning ahead means :
- Researching your destination
- Researching the culture of your destination
- Researching local customs and rules
- Booking your accomodations and transportation in advence
- Making a list of the activities you want to do
By doing this, you’ll save time, and money, and avoid the stress of trying to figure everything out on the fly.
N02 – Pack Smart
After planning, packing is the second thing you’ll do before heading off to your destination.
To make sure you get the best out of your trip you need to pack smart.
Packing is an essential part of any trip, but it’s easy to overpack and end up lugging around heavy bags.
A good rule of thumb is to pack versatile clothing and bring only what you need.
Consider using packing cubes to keep your items organized and maximize space in your luggage.
N03 – Stay connected
Traveling is all about disconnecting, but staying connected while traveling is very important for safety and convenience.
Make sure to have a copy of your travel itinerary and important documents, such as your passport, in case of an emergency. Share your travel itinerary with friends and family before leaving. If you are going to do a long trek or climb share the track and route you want to take with friends and family before heading out.
Consider getting an international SIM card, or a local SIM card (usually very cheap just buy a prepaid SIM card) or use a portable Wi-Fi hotspot to stay connected to the internet.
N04 – Try local food
One of the best ways to experience a new culture is through its food. Make sure during your travel to try local dishes, especially ones you’ve never had before. Ask locals which dishes they recommend and try them. Not only will you get a taste of the local flavor, but you may also discover new favorite dishes.
N05 – Be flexible
While planning is important, it’s also important to be flexible.
Unexpected things are bound to happen when traveling, a few examples are :
- Flight delays
- Flight cancellations
- Traffic
- Weather
It’s important to be prepared to face those unexpected situations and change if need be your itinerary.
Keep an open mind, and keep some leeway in your planning to be able to make adjustments to your plans if necessary.
N06 – Travel off-season
I’m a big fan of traveling off-season! It’s a great way to save money and avoid crowds.

N07 – Learn basic phrases
Learning a few basic phrases in the local language is not only fun but can go a long way in connecting with locals. It’s also a sign of respect and interest in their culture.
Simple phrases like “hello,” “please,” and “thank you” can help you communicate more effectively and make your trip more enjoyable.
N08 – Take care of your health
Traveling can take a toll on your health. It’s important to take care of yourself while you’re away.
Make sure to stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and eat well to avoid getting sick.
Medication can vary quite a bit depending on which country you’re traveling to. I’d suggest bringing medication and pain relief that you’re used to just in case you need it.
N09 – Be respectful
It’s important to be respectful of the local culture and customs when traveling. Be aware of dress codes, local traditions, and etiquette to avoid unintentionally offending locals.
Remember that you are a guest in their country and should act accordingly.
N10 – Purchase traval insurance
Unexpected expenses (for ex. trip cancellations, due to COVID restrictions, weather,…) can quickly add up. This goes with medical emergencies or lost luggage.
You never really know when one of the above might happen.
Travel insurance is a way to provide peace of mind and protect you from the unexpected.
Always take time to read the policy carefully to understand what is covered and what is not.
N11 – Research local customs and laws
Before traveling to a new destination, take the time to research local customs and laws.
This can include things for example appropriate attire, cultural practices, or legal restrictions on certain activities.
Being informed can help you avoid accidentally offending locals or getting into legal trouble. Better be safe than sorry.
N12 – Be aware of scams
Scams targeting specifically tourists are common in many destinations.
A quick research of common scams in the destination you’re traveling to is a good idea. Common scams are for example fake taxis, pickpocketing, and overcharging tourist attractions, …
Stay alert and keep your belongings close to yourself.
N13 – Take advantage of free activities
Many destinations offer free or low-cost activities that can be just as enjoyable as expensive ones.
Also booking activities ahead of time could save you some money in the long run. Some resorts charge a little more when you book through their activity center rather than directly with the company.
Look for parks, museums, and other attractions that are free or have discounted admission.
You can also explore the local markets or neighborhoods on foot to get a sense of the local culture.
N14 – Keep an open mind
One of the most important things you can do when traveling is to keep an open mind. Travel can be unpredictable, and you may encounter unfamiliar cultures, customs, and ways of life. Embrace the differences, try new things, and approach each experience with an open and curious mindset. You may be surprised at what you discover about yourself and the world around you.
N15 – Have fun !
Finally, remember to have fun! Traveling is a wonderful opportunity to experience new things and create lasting memories. Embrace new experiences, meet new people, and enjoy all that your destination has to offer.
