When in Rome (complete guide)

Rome is located in central Italy in a region named Lazio.

Rome is an amazing city for a weekend getaway.

In this article, I’ll try to give you a sense of some things you could do in Rome over a weekend trip. If you’re planning on staying longer then great! This article might give you ideas on what to do and what to expect.

Arriving in Rome

If you’re flying by air, you’ll likely be landing at the Fiumicino airport.

The airport is about an 45 minute drive from the city center of Rome.

Where to stay

I’d recommend staying in the city center, that way you’ll be able to explore more of the city on foot.

Last time I was in Rome I stayed near the trevi fountain an the hotels in this area were reasonably priced.

Alternatively staying near the Parthenon is also a nice option.

What to visit

The Colosseum

This monument is the most famous landmark you’ll find in Rome. It’s an ancient amphitheater that was built back in AD 80, it use to hold up to 50’000 spectators at a time.

The Colosseum was used for gladiator fights, public spectacles, and many other events.

Today, the Colosseum remains in Rome and can be toured. You can take a guided tour, which will take you back in history with fascinating insights of its role in ancient roman society.

The Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is an incredible and breathtaking archaeological site. This was once the center of ancient Rome.

Going through the Roman forum you will be able to explore the ruins of the ancient temples, basilicas, and other important buildings.

You’ll likely be impressed with what is left of the Roman forum and the trees surrounding the Roman Forum are gorgeous.

Guided tours through the forum are available, and well worth the money.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon stands in the center of Rome and is gorgeous.

The Pantheon was initially built as a temple dedicated to the gods.

Later on, the Pantheon was transformed into a church.

The Pantheon is famous for its dome which is very well preserved.

The Pantheon is free to visit, however on weekends and bank holidays, you need to reserve free tickets a day in advance.

The Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is incredibly famous and has been in many movies.

It’s completely free to access. Many people throw coins in the fountain and make wishes.

However, the Fountain being so crowded by tourists, i’d recommend going early in the morning before all the crowds.

The fountain is also beautiful at night, for that reasons i’d suggest at least checking it out twice, once in the morning and once in the evening when the sun is down.

The Vatican

The Vatican is another country located in the center of Rome. It’s well worth seeing, I’d recommend getting tickets in advance to be sure you can get a spot without having to wait too long in line.

Going through the Vatican museum you’ll be able to see a lot of history, as well, as art from famous artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

Near the end of your tour, you’ll get to see and enter the Sistine Chapel.

The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps are a beautiful staircase that leads up to the Trinita dei Monti church. This spot is quite popular and people enjoy sitting on the steps and enjoying a sunny day.

Trastevere

Trastevere is a beautiful neighborhood known for its narrow, winding streets and its lively nightlife.

It’s a great place to enjoy food or a coffee on a sunny morning.

The Aventine Hill

The Aventine Hill is one of the seven hills of Rome, and it is a great place to visit if you want to escape the city for a little bit. It is home to several beautiful churches and gardens, including the famous Orange Garden, which offers stunning views of the city.

5 Foods to try when in Rome

It’s no secret that Italian food is amazing, and if you’re a foodie Rome will not disappoint.
