What are candied orange slices ?

Jump to Recipe

Candied orange slices are sugar-coated orange slices. The orange slices become candied after being infused in a sugar syrup. After being candied the orange slices become chewy, sweet and very flavourfull.

As winter settles down and christmas is around the corner a lot of candied fruits appear in markets and shops. However, these treats can quickly add up and often don’t come cheap.

I’ll show you how to make these treats for a lot less! They’re really inexpensive to make and taste so much better when they’re homemade (doesn’t everything taste better when it’s homemade ?).

Candied oranges can be enjoyed on their own. Candied fruits are often used to garnish desserts and cocktails. You can place candied fruits on top of cakes, tarts, or cocktails sur as martinis or champagne.

Candied orange slices without chocolate

Ingredients

As said previously candied orange slices are really easy to make. All you’ll need is 5 ingredients, two of which are optional :

    • Oranges : You will want to select firm and fresh oranges. Aim for organic oranges, since you will be using the whole orange (which means peel included).
    • Water
    • Sugar : Use granulated white sugar to create your sugar syrup. White granulated sugar works best for candied fruits due to its neutral flavor and it’s ability to create a even smooth syrup.
    • Chocolate (optional – Dark Chocolate tends to blend well with oranges).
    • Sprinkles (optional)

You can get creative with the ingredients above and customive the candied oranges to your liking!

I personnally chose to add christmas sprinkles on some of mine, since they were christmas gifts for friends and neighbors.

You could also add for example sea salt, white chocolate, peppermint candy, … The possibilities are truly endless!

Alternatively, you could also try doing the same recipe with lemons or grapefruits. Some vegetables can also be candied such as carrots or turnips.

Steps

Step 1

First step is to clean your oranges. Try to source organic oranges if you can, since you will be eating the peel as well.

Step 2

Slice the oranges in thin slices of approximately 0.5cm (0.2 inches) and set the oranges aside.

Step 3

Mix the sugar with the water in the saucepan and bring to a boil.

Step 4

Delicately turn the slices every once and a while and leave the slices to simer for about 45 min to an hour.

Step 5

Then take the slices out off the saucepan and lay them on a rack to cool down and solidfy over night.

Step 6

Once your slices have nicely cooled down prepare your chocolate mix.

Step 7

Cut the chocolate in smaller chunks and then melt the chocolate (bain marie is my preffered method but you can melt the chocolate however you prefer).

Step 8

Dip half of the candied orange in chocolate to coat it.

Step 9

Sprinkle with sea salt to taste.
